How to Inspect Your Sprinkler System

Having a fire sprinkler system installed in your building is one of the best ways to ensure your property and everyone inside are protected in the event of a fire. We hope that you will never have to use your sprinkler system, but should a fire start it is important that your sprinklers work correctly. Most sprinkler systems will never need to be replaced, but checking them once or twice a year is always a good idea.

In order to properly check your system, you will first want to locate and initiate the main system shut-off valve. Afterwards, you should find and inspect the system’s main riser. When inspecting the main riser, take note of the water pressure that is displayed on the gauge. Generally the pressure should be somewhere between 50 and 100 PSI. If it is higher or lower, your system may need repairs.

You should also take some time to inspect all of the sprinkler heads throughout your building. If you have a large commercial property you may need some help to get this job done. The main thing you should be checking for are any signs of damaged or leaking heads. Ensure that nothing is being hung from any of your sprinkler heads, and if any of them appear to be broken you should have them repaired immediately.

Finally, you check take a look at the test valve to evaluate how well the entire system would work in the event of a fire. After slowly opening the valuable some water should come out and you should hear an alarm. Close the valve after ensuring both of these things have happened.
