Safety is always a big concern for families, especially for those with young children who are sent off to school every day. According to major fire safety and prevention organizations, educational institutions of all levels experience a decent number of fires every year. Statistics released in this report published by the National Fire Protection Association<\/a> (NFPA) found that an average of nearly 5,700 fires start every year at schools in America.<\/p>\n

An average of 4,060 fires per year has been experienced at preschool through high school facilities over the past few years. Half of these were set intentionally, according to the NFPA. The most common settings for these fires were either in the bathrooms or in kitchen areas within the school. The good news is that 93 percent of these fires were contained to their room of origin.<\/p>\n

Day care centers and college classroom facilities also experience some fires, but total fires for either type of educational setting averaged less than 1,000 per year. Most often, these were caused by cooking materials. In both of these settings, more than 90 percent of fires were contained to a single room as well.<\/p>\n

In terms of casualties, the NFPA reports an average of 85 civilian fire injuries that occur every year because of educational facility fires. The organization insists that schools should hold fire drills once a month while they are in session in order to practice emergency procedures so that when the time comes, students and faculty are ready to respond.<\/p>\n
